The three cancer treatments \u2013 surgery, chemotherapy and radiation &#8212; that have dominated Western medicine for decades are finding much needed competition in interesting new cancer treatments. Recent genetic and cellular research has resulted in discoveries that are broadening our understanding of cancer and how cancer cells interact with the body\u2019s immune system.<\/p>\n<p>These fascinating revelations are refocusing our approach to cancer treatment as traditionalists begin to recognize the benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/02\/integrative-approach-pushes-cancer-survival-rates-beyond-10-year-mark\/\">integrative medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/07\/immuotherapy-the-cancer-protocol-for-the-future\/\">immunotherapy<\/a> in treating cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the more interesting new treatment approaches are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengthening immune response.<\/strong> Genome sequencing is being used to identify immune system cells that attack specific mutations in malignant cells. In a recent trial, billions of immune system cells were replicated in the laboratory and infused into the patient\u2019s bloodstream. According to a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/09\/health\/doctors-use-patients-immune-cells-to-shrink-cancer-tumors.html?hpw&amp;rref=science&amp;_r=0\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> article, the patient\u2019s tumors began \u201cmelting away.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combining alternative and\u00a0conventional treatments.<\/strong> Increasingly, alternative cancer therapies are being used hand-in-hand with\u00a0conventional cancer treatments as oncologists recognize the value of taking an integrative approach to treating cancer. By <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/05\/immunotherapy-in-the-news\/\">combining immunotherapy with\u00a0conventional treatment<\/a>, patients are experiencing better outcomes with fewer problematic side effects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Targeting cell processes.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.issels.com\/advancedtargetedtherapies.aspx\">Advanced targeted therapies<\/a> are being used to manipulate specific cell processes, allowing immune system cells to more effectively and efficiently attack cancer cells. Researchers are also experimenting with genetically reprogramming cells.
