Yet, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/life-style\/health\/gene-link-inherited-prostate-cancer-born-gene-10-20-times-risk-article-1.1005705\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>, researchers have finally found their first link between inherited genes and prostate cancer\u00a0&#8212; a HOXB13 gene mutation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers took\u00a0samples from\u00a05,100 prostate cancer patients who were 55 years old or younger (94 families\u00a0represented) and\u00a01,400 healthy men.\u00a0After sequencing\u00a0more than 200 genes, they found the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>72 men in four families carried the same HOXB13 gene mutation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Only one man in the control group had it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although these results aren\u2019t definitive\u00a0proof that the\u00a0mutation causes\u00a0prostate\u00a0cancer, it does\u00a0appear\u00a0to be a factor. The researchers also found two more mutations among African men, but they need\u00a0a larger sampling to confirm if these mutations also play a role.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Big Picture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doctors trace the risk of inherited breast cancer in women\u00a0through tests that look for mutations of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that can contribute to\u00a0cancer growth.
