Researchers and healthcare specialists are about to find out as genetic profiles of thousands of cancer patients have been released to the public.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Big data meets cancer research<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Results of genomic testing are normally kept confidential and stored within a patient&#8217;s file. Early this past March, Ambry Genetics made the contents of their <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/03\/08\/ambry-genetics-ambryshare-breast-cancer-data\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><u><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AmbryShare database<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> publicly available at no charge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The database contains anonymous data obtained from testing of the company&#8217;s thousands of breast and ovarian cancer patients. Doctors, researchers and other patients can now access this information in search of genetic patterns.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Delaying medical progress&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Amber Genetics CEO and founder Charles Dunlop, himself a <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/13\/cancer-super-survivors-give-us-all-hope\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><u><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">stage four cancer survivor<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, issued a statement in conjunction with the data release. In it, he expressed shock that public and private laboratories would withhold such information at the cost of &#8220;delaying medical progress&#8221; that could end the suffering of other cancer patients.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not everyone is optimistic about this development. Genetics professor David B. Goldstein of Columbia University told the <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">New York Times<\/span><\/em> he was unsure that this database is enough to make a difference.
