Several vets are fighting a rare <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/issels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">form of cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> that stems from food they ingested overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">When Food Becomes Deadly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Residents of Vietnam and other parts of Asia have long known about the dangers of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Still-fighting-Vietnam-vets-seek-help-for-rare-10610450.php\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">eating raw or poorly cooked river fish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">. It often holds parasites known as liver flukes that latch onto the lining of the bile duct, causing inflammation and scarring over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Decades later, the afflicted patient can develop a rare cancer called cholangiocarcinoma. Sadly, the symptoms usually don&#8217;t present themselves until the later stages after the tumor has advanced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Vietnam Vets Struggle for Assistance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">According to Ralph Erickson, head of post-deployment health services for the Department of Veteran Affairs, roughly 700 cholangiocarcinoma patients have gone through the agency&#8217;s medical system. However, less than half of them submitted claims because it never occurred to them that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/10\/expert-states-traditional-cancer-treatments-are-out-of-step-with-modern-advances\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> was linked to their military service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Michael Baughman, a 64-year-old veteran from Danville, VA, is one of the patients who was diagnosed with bile duct cancer.
