Researchers have found a surprising link between <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/issels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">immunotherapy for cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/link-between-microbiome-cancer-immunotherapy-skin-cancer-2017-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">bacteria found in your gut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Varied Responses to Immunotherapy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While scientists had previously made the connection with mice, a team at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center recently made a breakthrough with the first study involving humans. The subjects included 233 patients with advanced melanoma.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A subset of 43 patients was on <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/16\/immune-checkpoint-inhibitors-the-role-they-play-in-cancer-immunotherapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">checkpoint inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, one of the primary methods of immunotherapy for cancer. Out of this group, 30 responded to the treatment while 13 did not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What made the difference? The researchers discovered that the 30 patients who responded had a wider variety of <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/15\/which-foods-have-probiotic-benefits-for-cancer-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">gut bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, particularly a specific type called Clostridiales, along with a higher concentration of the immune cells that fight cancer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Strengthening the Immune System<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Fred Ramsdell, vice president of research at the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, it&#8217;s likely that exposure to a greater amount of bacteria during your lifetime results in a more robust immune system. Exactly why this happens is still a puzzle for now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Experts are optimistic that this information will eventually be used to more effectively target patients who will respond to immunotherapy treatments.
