According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/eat-healthy-get-active\/acs-guidelines-nutrition-physical-activity-cancer-prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy diet and physical activity<\/a> are the most important <a href=\"http:\/\/issels.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer risk prevention<\/a> factors after avoiding tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>How much of a difference can nutrition and exercise make? The World Cancer Research Fund estimates that approximately 20 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States are related to excess weight and poor eating habits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reduce Cancer Risk with Healthy Habits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may not be able to control your genetic makeup, but you can take steps to stay active and <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/25\/world-cancer-research-fund-your-weight-does-impact-cancer-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintain a proper weight<\/a>. Follow these guidelines offered by the ACS:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Stay as lean as possible. If you&#8217;re overweight, even a modest weight loss can improve your health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Get a minimum of <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/02\/could-exercise-be-the-magic-pill-that-wards-off-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30 minutes of moderate physical activity<\/a> at least five times a week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Limit &#8220;screen time&#8221; with TVs, computers, video games and other sedentary activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Practice portion control during mealtimes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Minimize consumption of red meat and processed meat. Eat at least five half-cup servings of fruits and vegetables each day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Avoid refined grain food items, such as white bread and white rice, that have little nutritional value.
