A study by researchers at MIT has shed some light on how <a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2016\/diet-influences-colon-cancer-0302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-fat diets can trigger colon cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of Stem Cells in Colon Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/26\/does-low-dose-aspirin-therapy-work-to-prevent-colon-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colon cancer<\/a> arises from mutations that tend to accumulate among intestinal stem cells, which last a lifetime. Omer Yilmaz, an assistant professor of biology at MIT, led a team that set out to discover the process behind these cellular changes.<\/p>\n<p>For nine months to a year, Yilmaz and his team fed healthy mice a diet composed of 60 percent fat. In addition to gaining up to 50 percent more body mass, these mice developed more intestinal tumors than those on a <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/23\/highlighting-the-issels-nutritional-immunotherapy-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effects of High-Fat Diet on Intestinal Cells<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers observed significant changes in the intestinal stem cells of the mice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The mice eating a high-fat diet had a higher number of intestinal stem cells.
