Scientists are discovering that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-41848461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;good&#8221; bacteria<\/a> living inside of us can have positive implications for <a href=\"http:\/\/issels.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Can Bacteria Be &#8220;Good?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The microbiome is a collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/14\/gut-flora-and-cancer-the-important-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microscopic organisms found inside our bodies<\/a>, primarily in the gut. These organisms play a role in the digestive process and help to regulate the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in France and the United States conducted separate studies involving the microbiome of cancer patients. All participants were receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/10\/what-makes-the-issels-immunotherapy-approach-so-different\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immunotherapy treatment<\/a>, which boosts the ability of the immune system to fight cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Relationship Between Gut Bacteria and Cancer Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The team at the Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus in Paris studied 249 patients with lung or kidney cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">&#8211; Participants who had taken antibiotics, which disturb the microbiome, were more likely to experience tumor growth, even during treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">&#8211; A bacteria species known as A. muciniphila was found in two-thirds of patients who responded to immunotherapy, as opposed to only one-third of those who did not.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a team analyzed the microbiome of 112 patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/24\/what-every-person-should-know-about-melanoma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advanced melanoma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Patients who responded to cancer treatment were found to have a more rich and varied microbiome than those who didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The composition of the microbiome also appeared to be significant, as higher levels of certain bacteria were associated with positive responses while others had negative impacts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovative Cancer Treatment at Issels\u00ae<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/issels.com\/treatment-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immunotherapy programs<\/a> focus on cancer cells as well as the internal environment that supports them. <a href=\"http:\/\/66.135.32.155\/issels\/Questionnaire\/request-issels-info.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contact us<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bacteria is generally considered to be the cause of disease and infection, but many varieties have beneficial properties.
