Flash forward to today when, thanks to remarkable improvements in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer treatment<\/a>, patients are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/readme\/people-can-live-quite-happily-alongside-cancer-i-have-been-doing-that-for-the-past-11-years-3917471-Mar2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning to live with the disease as their \u201cnew normal.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Liz Burke: One Woman\u2019s Story<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In TheJournal.ie, an Irish news website, a woman named Liz Burke shared her experiences in honor of Daffodil Day, a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society. Liz was originally diagnosed with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/30\/new-imaging-system-identifies-if-a-breast-cancer-will-respond-favorably-to-chemotherapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breast cancer<\/a>\u00a0in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>After a lumpectomy, Liz underwent a course of chemotherapy followed by another of radiotherapy. She demonstrated her sense of humor by relating a story about purchasing a wig to cover her baldness and finding it one day in the mouth of her Jack Russell terrier.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, Liz\u2019s doctor discovered that breast cancer cells had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/30\/cancer-news-cancer-can-metastasize-without-involvement-of-the-lymph-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metastasized to her liver<\/a>. This triggered another nine months of chemotherapy followed by two years of maintenance, but the good news is that the tumors became inactive.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, one more blow. After five years, the breast cancer metastasized again, this time resulting in a brain tumor. Liz had surgery to remove the tumor and radiotherapy treatment afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cPeople Survive Cancer\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These days Liz follows a regular schedule of MRIs, CT scans and weekly infusions.
