Recent studies of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/321443.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relationship between cancer and fat cells<\/a>\u00a0may have implications concerning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immunotherapy for cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeding the Growth of Cancer Cells<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the precise causes are not yet known, obesity has been identified as a risk factor for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/16\/new-blood-test-identifies-which-prostate-cancer-patients-will-respond-favorably-to-specific-medications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prostate cancer<\/a>, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. As a result, research into the link between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issels.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/26\/obese-men-more-likely-to-die-from-prostate-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer and fat cells<\/a>\u00a0has focused on this form of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Previous tests involved mice who were fed a high-fat diet. In contrast, researchers at Sanford Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego conducted a study using mice who lacked a protein called p62, causing them to become obese on a normal diet.<\/p>\n<p>According to co-author Dr. Jorge Moscat, this control was necessary to get a clear understanding of the communication pathways between cancer and fat cells. The team discovered that p62 suppresses another protein known as mTORC1, which in turn inhibits energy use by fat cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can Cancer Cells Be \u201cStarved\u201d to Death?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With metabolism halted in fat cells, nutrients are then available to fuel development of tumor cells.
