Dear Sir,

This letter is written in support of Dr. Josef Issels of 8183 Rottach-Egern, Werinherstrasse 2. West Germany.

I am Head and Chairman of the department of Medicine at King's College Hospital Medical School, University of London, England.

I am a former Medical Research Council Fellow and a Rockefeller Research Fellow in clinical medicine. I have recently been Royal Society Visiting Professor of Medicine to the University of Singapore, as well as an examiner in medicine in England, France, India, Malaysia and Singapore. I am a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, The Royal Society of Medicine, The Institute of Biology and the British Computer Society: I am President of Salutis Unitas, an international organization interested in health care delivery.

I have known Dr. Issels for 12 years and been involved in an assessment of him both as a person and as a clinician. I first met Dr. Issels in his clinic in Rottach-Egern, West Germany where he has stayed since that time. I reported the weeks assessment to the British Broadcasting Corporation on the 3rd March 1969, this report has been published. I still consider it correct and confirm the opinion I then expressed on his qualifications and his clinical ability as a doctor. He deals with medicine and patients with a deep understanding and great concern. His clinical patients with known cancer have come there from all parts of the world, except the Soviet Union and China. Certainly some found what they came for, but all were helped. He has contributed to our understanding of the whole-person approach to cancer therapy and the problems involved in controlling a serious whole-body disease.

A list of his membership of national and international societies is given to illustrate his wide interests and ability. He is a member of the German Cancer Society and the Bavarian Cancer Society. He is a member of the Association of German Natural Scientists and Physicians as well as belonging to the usual professional societies. In Europe he is a member of The Royal Medical Society of Scotland, the Acadamia Teatina, Florence, Italy. He is a Knight of the Order of the White Cross of Amsterdam, Holland.

Internationally, he is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a member of the American Association of the Advancement of Science. He has read original papers to learned societies in Europe and lectured on the East and West coast of America including the Universities of Cornell, and California. He is also a member of the International Academy of Biological Medicine in Argentina, South America. He has had books published about him, and has himself published more than twenty original papers, and some books describing his work.

In his clinical work he has always strived for excellent care for his patients and he is a clinician of exceptional ability in his field, with original ideas and concepts. He is at present a member of, and adviser to the Commission of the West German Government about the treatment of cancer. His reputation is international as well as national and he is known for his clinical work and research, not only in Europe, but in North and South America. His new ideas have aroused challenge and change and there is no doubt his approaches have forced others to reconsider theirs. He has had an impact internationally in the cancer field.

His cancer clinic in Rottach-Egern in West Germany has been visited by doctors from all over the world, as well as by patients. Not all have accepted his views, or his therapy, but his devotion to the care of his seriously ill patients has never been in doubt as I know from specialists from England who have visited it. As well as a keen observer of clinical facts, he has kept comprehensive and extensive clinical records about his complex therapy which covers all aspects of the whole person to his illness, and his own approach to it. His patients come from many countries and his extensive records have enabled him to produce data about his complete and long term remissions in seriously ill cancer patients who had been rejected by other doctors. He has conducted research, not only into anti-cancer therapy, but into immunilogical, nutritional and biochemical aspects of this serious disease. He has as I know treated over 10,000 patients with proven cancer. His long term remission rate is still significantly greater than that of other physicians working in this field, and better than the standard cancer registry data.

He is also a warm, understanding doctor who is keen to share his skills and knowledge with others. I have no doubt that his professional standing and clinical abilities are in keeping with his international reputation.
