An Update on the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer

Early Cancer Detection
Early Cancer Detection

At Issels®, our goal is providing each cancer patient alternative programs that include personalized treatment to address their needs. These include non-toxic therapies and our non-toxic immunobiologic core treatment for many types of the disease including prostate cancer.

In an article published by UK based, The Telegraph, the question was asked if researchers were making advances in detecting prostate cancer in its early stages as the number of men with prostate cancer was rising significantly. The article stated that from the research findings of Macmillan Cancer Support, the stats show more than 30,000 men living in the UK are in the advanced stages of incurable prostate cancer. Research also indicates that prostate cancer will lead the list as the most common cancer for men by the year 2030.

Along with the rise in diagnosed cases, more men are insisting on in-depth research. To this end, new drugs are currently in development and more research is underway to shed light on the progression and treatment of the disease. Men are also being better educated as to the importance of early detection through self-checks.

According to the CEO of Prostate Cancer UK, Owen Sharp, “A man in the UK dies each hour from prostate cancer and another is diagnosed every 15 minutes…” This is unacceptable on every level and is why more research, more testing options, better drugs, and continued awareness by men of the importance of making an appointment with their doctor, early on, is of the utmost importance.

Colon Cancer: Now a Cancer that Attacks Young People

Colon Cancer
Colon Cancer

Cancer at any age can be devastating and when one type, that was previously associated with only older men and women, is attacking younger people, it adds to the frustration of dealing with this disease. At Issels®, our staff is dedicated to working with and supporting cancer patients of all ages.

Colon cancer is usually associated with men and women ages 50 and over but Andrea Payne, who is not yet 50, was diagnosed with the disease. Following a car accident that left Ms. Payne in a coma for over 35 hours, she began experiencing pain and discomfort in her bowel along with blood in her stool. Doctors told her the symptoms were a result of the pain medicine she was taking.

It took two years and more tests before Ms. Payne was finally diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. Five months later, she was diagnosed with yet another problem, thyroid cancer.

Andrea received the treatment she needed for both cancers and is closing in on her one year anniversary as being cancer free. Through strong support of her friends and family, she is a survivor. Her message to both men and women is to not assume they are too young to be diagnosed with colon cancer.

Doctors recommend colon cancer screenings and while many people choose to ignore or put off testing, Andrea hopes her story will inspire others to not wait until they turn 50, or older, to have the screening that can detect a problem early.

Discovery of Six Molecules that Block Cancer

Blocking Cancer
Blocking Cancer

In a recently released paper from the University of Kansas, scientists announced they have isolated six molecules capable of blocking the protein HuR. Known as an “oncoprotein” that attaches itself to RNA, the HuR protein enables tumor growth. These findings could potentially lead to new non-toxic cancer treatments like those used by Issels® Integrative Immuno-Oncology. Personalized treatment protocols and immunotherapy are proving to be the best route to a cancer cure.

HuR inhibitors

Researchers have been studying HuR cells for many years. The cancer-building protein is found at high levels in practically every type of cancer. These six molecular needles that the University of Kansas scientists have found in the haystack of human molecules are considered a significant breakthrough in halting cancer stem cells, which are considered the seeds of cancer. According to Liang Xu, associate professor of molecular biosciences and one of the authors of the paper, there were no known HuR inhibitors prior to this discovery.

Potential for a wide array cancer treatments

Xu goes on to say that because HuR has a significant role in so many different types of cancer, the discovery of these proteins holds promise for new cancer drugs in the fight against cancers that attack all areas of the body. HuR and other RNA-binding proteins have been considered untreatable until now. This study, published in ACS Chemical Biology, provides proof of the concept that a new class of cancer drugs can be developed specifically for cancer stem cells.

The treatments used at Issels® Integrative Immuno-Oncology are the result of decades of research and scientific breakthroughs. Contact us to learn more and sign up for our free e-News-letter.

“Angelina” Effect Causes An Increase in Genetic Cancer Testing

DNA
Genetic Predisposition

Hereditary ovarian and breast cancer have made the news in recent years thanks to Angelina Jolie. The actress made headlines in 2013 after revealing that she had a double mastectomy after finding out that she carries genetic mutations that increase her risk of breast and ovarian cancer. In 2015, she had her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed.

Jolie’s disclosures have raised awareness of these types of cancer, prompting more women to undergo genetic testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. However, in the latest cancer news, some major insurance companies are refusing to cover the costs of this testing. These companies, which include Aetna and Cigna, won’t cover these costs out of concern that the tests are unproven and might end up causing patients to seek unnecessary medical care, such as preventive chemotherapy.

Health experts, including physicians and genetic counselors, have defended these tests, stating that delaying them could be putting patients who do carry these mutations at risk. If they knew that they were carriers, they could be taking steps to reduce their risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, such as making dietary changes.

Some health professionals also state that making these tests cost-prohibitive makes it harder for researchers to study their effectiveness in more detail. Health experts are encouraging insurance companies to cover the costs of genetic testing for cancer in order to reduce the costs associated with eventually having to treat cancer in those with a high risk.

Technion Lab Finds Protein That Suppresses Cancer

Researchers Find New Cancer Suppressing Protein
Researchers Find New Cancer Suppressing Protein

Researchers at Israel’s oldest university, the Technion, have found two proteins that are able to suppress the spreading and growth of cancer cells. In the published paper on their findings, researchers show that these proteins can repress cancer. They also mention that high levels of the protein called KPC1 and another called p50 are able to protect tissue from tumors.

The research

This study took place in Professor Aaron Ciechanover’s laboratory. He is a recipient of the Nobel Prize for chemistry for discovering the ubiquitin process. This process is a cell system that breaks down damaged proteins that can potentially damage otherwise healthy cells and tissue. Scientists used human tumors for the study that were then grown inside of mice. They also used samples taken from human tumors themselves.

The ubiquitin system

These previously unknown proteins were discovered while studying the ubiquitin process. The process is an essential part of the life of cells. It handles the destruction of defective proteins that will damage cells if not eliminated. The ubiquitin system will typically tag the unhealthy proteins, along with nonessential healthy proteins, for destruction.

The proteins

When KPC1 is a key component of the ubiquitin system, it generates p50. Researchers found higher levels of KPC1 and/or p50 in healthy tissue can defend the tissue from cancerous tumors. Developing drugs or cancer treatments based on the findings is possible, but years in the future.

At Issels® Integrative Immuno-Oncology, we utilize the patient’s own immune system to defend against and eliminate cancer cells. Could It Be True that Pot Kills Cancer Cells?

Marijuana Tests Positive For Fighting Cancer Cells
Marijuana Tests Positive For Fighting Cancer Cells

Information about pot and its medicinal powers regarding cancer is a hot topic, especially with some states easing up on the sale of medical marijuana. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with cancer and you have questions about options, at Issels®, you can learn everything you need to know from specialists providing cancer treatment programs.

Does Cannabis really help treat cancer?

According to a publication by The National Institute on Drug Abuse, the answer is yes. The publication states “Recent animal studies have shown that marijuana extracts may help kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others.”

The  publication goes on to say, “Research from one animal study suggests that extracts from whole-plant marijuana can slow the growth of cancer cells from one of the most serious types of brain tumors.”

Marijuana does not have the approval of being a true medicine by the US Food And Drug Administration. Further studies indicate particular cannabinoids (chemicals) found in the plant are medically inclined. Based on this information, the FDA has however, approved two medications containing the two chemicals – THC and CBD.

THC is the cannabinoid that impacts patients positively. The chemical helps decrease pain and inflammation, help with muscle control, and alleviate the aggravation and stress of an upset stomach. It also increases the appetite which aids patients who don’t feel like eating.

Studies are also underway to determine the effect of marijuana on:

  • Mental disorders
  • Seizures
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Disorders from substance use
  • HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, AIDS and multiple sclerosis
